Freecom Media Player 350 - Troubleshooting

Installation Ethernet LAN Wireless Lan Troubleshooting File Types Interesting Things & Firmwares

Some day I'll get around to putting this lot into some sort of order. Meantime, whenever I see a useful bit of info, or discover some way to sort a problem I meet, I'll jot down a note about it here. So, sorry it's not very structured, but it's all a question of time....time which could be spent on the golf course........

Firmware Installation problem: (thanks to "Lonewolf_denny" of the Freecom Forum)

MESSAGE STARTS: "Hi, Come across this problem (as the title suggests).

Up until last night I could stream all my xvid & divx movies (from pc) fine.
Infact, it works so well that I struggle to find stuff that doesn't play/stream :D
(the obvious exceptions are true hd content, and some ac3 audio movies).

That was until today !!!
All of a sudden all the files I have been watching now come up with the message
"Cannot playback file. Audio/Video format is not supported" ... WTF !!!

Copying over a movie into the mediaplayer itself, and playing from there seem to work just fine :?:

Ok. I assumed the firmware had become corrupted somehow :?:
Reflashed the MediaPlayer unit with the current 1.4.6 firmware
No Change. Still the same message.

STOP PRESS ------- While typing this, I remembered that I upgraded my McAfee last night
to a completely newer version 8.5i (I also custom tweaked some settings).

This had been blocking the mediaplayer from accessing the files correctly.

In section of 'Access Protection Properties'
Anti-virus Outbreak Control > Block read and write access to all shares
This was selected (and preventing full access)
(untick to allow normal access, and all streams fine)" MESSAGE ENDS

Factory reset for 350

I can't find the name of the original poster of this - sorry - if you are the author, let me know and I'll give you the credit!: Note that there seems some doubt whether this reinstates the original firmware - it may only reinstates other default settings.

"1) Turn on the unit.
2) Press 'SET UP' button
3) Press '0 8 5 2' on the remote control.
4) Press the 'left arrow' button.
5) Press the 'OK' button.

you have to type the code and left arrow reasonably quickly.

you have wait 3 to 5 minutes, power off and power on again" MESSAGE ENDS

Factory Reset Procedure

Here's a second message re resetting, this time thanks to "Skeeter201" of the Freecom Forum. Note that, as with the one above, there seems some doubt whether this reinstates the original firmware - it may only reinstate other default settings.

File Sharing Problem

Windows XP Professional (and Windows 2000) have a good degree of built-in security which can impact on the ease with which file sharing is enabled. Make things easier by opening My Computer, then going to the Tools/Folder Options/View menu and tick the box "Use simple file sharing"
